ALTO PASS, Ill. - One after another, motorcycles rumbled up to the annual Blessing of the Bikes. Organizers stopped counting how many entered at 3 p.m. At that point nearly 3,900 people had already joined together in prayer at the base of the Bald Knob Cross.

There was so much bike traffic on the tiny road leading up to Bald Knob Cross. It took some folks as long as an hour and a half to ride from the highway to the base of the cross. "They're backed up for miles trying to get in," said Christian Motorcyclist Association Member Tammy Spees.

No one anticipated quite so many bikers, and it put a strain on supplies. The welcome center ran out of sodas for sale, then started giving away ice water, and then ran out of ice. So many bikes were blessed; items at the cross were scarce as well. "We give out a cross and a sticker that says ‘I was blessed in 2007'. We're almost out. So we've given out a lot," said Spees during an interview just after 1 p.m. with three hours of the event left to go.

One thing there wasn't a shortage of at Bald Knob Cross - there was plenty of faith to go around. "It just goes to show you that God's working; or they wouldn't be here. There's a lot of other places to go today on a beautiful day like today riding a bike, rather than come up here on this hill."

Bikers continued to venture to Bald Knob Cross even after the scheduled activities ended. Overall organizers say this year's Blessing of the Bikes event was among the most successful southern Illinois has ever had.
