Professor resigns during sex offender registry inquiry
By: Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Missouri State University associate professor facing controversy after he was identified as a registered sex offender has resigned.
Eugene Michael Hendrix reached a tentative separation agreement late Friday with the university. The university's Board of Governors must approve the agreement.
Missouri State Provost Belinda McCarthy said Hendrix approached her Friday and said he thought it would be in the best interest of his family and the university to resign.
Hendrix, a tenured associate professor in biomedical sciences, has been teaching at the university since 1995.
He pleaded guilty in Ohio in 1983 to raping a nine-year-old Cincinnati boy and served three-and-a-half years in prison. A Missouri State student recently brought attention to his history.
