Survey finds series of holes lock and dam

EAST ALTON, Il. -- A survey crew discovered a series of holes at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam on the Mississippi River last week, prompting a quick repair effort.
The US Army Corps of Engineers says the dam near East Alton, Illinois, was not structurally compromised and there is no threat to the public safety.
Officials say the so-called scour holes vary in depth, exposing the steel-sheet pile beneath the dam's concrete foundation in some places.
The Corps plans to bring in underwater sound imaging equipment to look at the scour holes more closely. About 16,000 tons of rock are on order to repair the holes. It will be brought in by barge in the next few weeks.
