MT. VERNON, Ill. - A domestic dispute put a neighborhood on lock down, locked police in a standoff, and ended in gunfire. Police blocked off the entire 800 block of N.12th Street in Mt. Vernon during the stand-off which began at approximately 5 p.m.
Police say the incident started as a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. The wife was evidently asking for a divorce and the husband threatened her with a hand gun. She escaped and ran to police.
When police arrived, the man barricaded himself inside the home, and officers worked to coax him out while making sure the neighbors stayed safe.
"The first thing I saw was a sniper laying in the driveway right next to my house pointing the gun at the house across the street from us. It's pretty scary; we didn't know exactly what was going on. There were police next to my home, police all over the neighborhood and SWAT teams," said neighbor Sue Sammons.
Police did all they could to convince the man to put down the gun and come outside. However the stand-off ended only when the man shot himself in the chest.
He was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital just down the street, but was pronounced dead. Police are withholding the man's name pending notification of kin.
