Military officials say up to 2500 soldiers from Fort Campbell will be shipped overseas to Afghanistan to maintain security at the airport at Kandahar. That's where Taliban fighters are being held as prisoners. Commanding General Richard Cody revealed today that about 700 soldiers from the 187th are already in Pakistan as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The recent deployment commits as many as 3200 soldiers from the 187th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division to America's war on terrorism. The soldiers' mission will be to relieve Marines at the airport to ensure that the airfield is secure. Officers say the troops could see combat or would support humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.
