Should we consider a smoking ban in vehicles?

PADUCAH, Ky. - Some states are pushing the anti-smoking message to another level; we looked into it and here is the deal.  Would you believe you can't smoke in your own car?

"I think that is ridiculous" said Denise Ford of Murray, KY.
That is the new law in Arkansas if you have someone in the vehicle under the age of six.

Some smokers don't like the idea and Ford is one of them, "People should be allowed to smoke in their car with their kids if they want to."  She's an avid smoker and mother of a 3-month old girl.

"I don't think it's a bad thing as long as the windows are down and they're covered up.  I always put a blanket over her."
One smoker, Brenda Funk, said it is common sense; you have to snuff the habit when kids are around, "you shouldn't smoke in front of the children."
"If your kids are in the car it's your choice to smoke in front of them not the states choice" said Ford.
Heartland News spoke with the law maker endorsing the bill in Arkansas and he's says it's pretty cut and dry.
Our children are precious cargo and passing this law is the states way of keeping the air around the kids smoke free.
Arkansas' law gives law enforcement the right to hand out $25 fines to violators.  Louisiana passed a similar piece of legislation restricting smoking in the car around kids and California law-makers are introducing a bill of their own.
The former Surgeon General Richard Carmona said they are pushing this idea because exposure to secondhand smoke can increase the risk of respiratory problems and sudden infant death syndrome.
