CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO --Her former co-workers and managers are still shocked after the woman they trusted is accused of stealing up to $35,000 from the General Sign Company in Cape Girardeau. On Friday morning, Scott City Police arrested 40-year old Charlotte Wrinkle on four counts of felony stealing and two counts of fraudulent use of credit cards.
Charlotte Wrinkle served as the company's accounts payable clerk for eight years. She handled the money, and now she's in trouble over how she handled it. Company managers didn't want to go on camera, but tell Heartland News Wrinkle charged groceries, home furnishings, and gas...all on the company. They fired her on June 20th. Scott City Police Officer Regina Cook's been working on this case for the last month. "We've put several man hours working on this case. Went through several receipts", said Cook. Right now Wrinkle's only in hot water over the gas charges. Police say she purchased gas 435 times on company credit cards over the course of three years. "Unfortunately the statute of limitation only allows us to go back three years", said Cook. And, the company says the embezzlement goes back a lot farther than that. But, as of now records show Wrinkle stole about $8,000. Officer Cook says, "We were able to obtain some video and some receipts, some pretty hard evidence against her."
Wrinkle hired an attorney and plans to fight this in court. Heartland News Reporter Crystal Britt spoke on the phone with Wrinkle Friday afternoon, Wrinkle said "No comment". Her attorney could not be reached as well.
Wrinkle is out of jail on bond. Her first court appearance is September 27th.
