Back to School Early

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO --Kids who attend Deer Creek Christian Academy are already hitting the books. They get an early start compared to most other students. Why? They have a modified year round calendar. So, for the kids, while some of their friends and neighbors are soaking up the end of summer, they're doing homework.
Fifth grader, Ben Ivie, admits that makes him a tiny bit green with envy. "I'd rather be swimming, but I like school," said Ben.
Ben's brother Ryan agrees. But, in Septemer they'll be the ones laughing. Because of Deer Creek's modified schedule, they get a two week break every seven weeks. "That's very nice," Ben adds. "You don't get bored with school. I really enjoy that. I like the way that's set up."
And, their parents like it too. "They were happy with their new backpacks and supplies," said Beverely Ivie.
Director Jackie Bradtner says Deer Creek's calendar means they don't have to spend a lot of time reviewing old material. Something that makes everyone happy. "On August first, the students came bounding in," said Bradtner.
