What We're Doing Over Here

October 21, 2001

This is Major Gary Inman. I was called to active duty on Sept 17th and left on the next day.  I wrote about 4 weeks ago and understand that my letter was read on the air.  I’m assigned to the Headquarters for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.

A part of the work here at the Headquarters is to support the current activities for Homeland Defense but also to contribute people and equipment to other areas of the world.  The focus of our work up to this point has been to execute plans that had been written for different scenarios.  Like most plans, no matter how you try to figure out what will happen, there are always changes to meet the current situation.  It’s frustrating but also challenging.  At this level you realize that you’re just a small portion to a much larger organization.  It’s also important to remember that Generals are reviewing your recommendations and making the decisions.  They rely on your best work and effort.  I am a witness to this and can tell you that the finest our country has to offer is at work to keep our troops as safe as possible and to carry out the will of our civilian leadership.

The work here at Headquarters also involves planning for what will support the long-term operations.  There will be many more people (active duty, Reserve, and National Guard) that will be called to continue the fight with the same dedication to duty and devotion to country.  Some will be on the ground in direct contact with the enemy but many more will be supporting the operation.  Each person involved does this with an understanding that our leadership is focused and that the public supports the action we are taking.

I’ve been told personally of the pride in our military members and think we’re doing the right thing.  For each of you, I thank you for those kind words.   They are a source of strength to those of us away from family and friends.  But let me turn this around.  While we actually do the work, it’s all of you, the American Public that I applaud for your patience, perseverance, and waiting for the results.   In my opinion, it is harder for all of you at home to worry about your loved ones stationed in all parts of the world – wondering when they will return.

I close this installment with a quote from I Peter 5: 8-10

8. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

9. But resist him, firm in your faith, know that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

10. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

This has helped me keep my perspective during this time.  We are fighting evil.  By trusting in God, we cannot fail.
