Walking For A Cure

Each year, thousands of cancer survivors walk in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. It's all done to raise money for cancer research. But to cancer survivors, the event is much more than just a walk, it's a time to celebrate. At the Cape Girardeau Relay for Life, people are wearing shirts that say we are winning.

Those people are winning. They've won their battle, their battle against cancer. Judy Eaker is just one of the survivors at the walk. It's been almost 11 years since doctors told her she had breast cancer. They found it when she went in for her yearly mammogram. Judy says, "I didn't tell my husband for 3 days. It just takes you by surprise. It's like, what am I going to do. It's really devastating at first."

a devastation that Judy has had to deal with at other times in her life. Not with herself, but with her family. Her sister and her mother both had cancer. So did several members of her mother's family. That's why Judy's out at the walk, leading the way. "It's just kind of awesome to see the people who have had cancer and have survived and they're walking," Judy says. "It gives you a good feeling, and its always a good feeling to see all the people out there to support cancer."

They won't stop helping, and the cancer survivors won't stop fighting until they find a cure. There so many people in Judy's family who have had cancer, that its led Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska to do a study of her family. They're hoping that by studying her family, they'll find out more about the disease.
