Medicare "D" goes into effect January 1st, 2005, but the enrollment begins Tuesday, November 15th. Now the problem is, some people don't understand the plan.
"It's not really that tough. But you don't really know how tough it will be until you get into the program," Thomas Crowe said. Crowe is a 77 year old from Dexter who attended a Medicare "D" meeting at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter. Organizers at the center decided to hold the meeting to help their residents and community understand the changes.
Nurse consultant Debbie Statler, who did the presentation at the meeting, says it the biggest change in Medicare in its 40 year history. Here are some of the changes:
*Anyone eligible for Medicare can sign up for the plan.
*If you're on Medicaid you are already enrolled, but you have to decide what plan is best for you.
*You can sign up by yourself, or with you health insurance agent.
*To be covered for the start of next year, you have to be signed up by January 1st.
*You have to sign up by May to not incur a penalty in the future.
