Drug Operation Busted

Investigators with the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force say a routine traffic stop helped put the brakes on a multi-state drug operation.

The undercover surveillance video agents shared with us, gave new meaning to the phrase, "there's no honor among thieves."

Investigators used a hidden camera to watch as two suspects exchanged marijuana; just the evidence they needed to put a serious dent in a drug operation stretching all the way from El Paso, Texas to Bloomington, Illinois.

"We believe one of the suspects has ties to Southeast MIssouri, so he could have been dropping off some drugs here," Sgt. Kevin Glaser, who heads the Task Force says.

Police first arrested Jose Villagomez, of Chicago, Illinois, along with a woman, for speeding through a construction zone near Sikeston.

But investigators were in for a surprise.

They found marijuana valued at more than $94,000 in the couple's car, along with the woman's ten month old baby.

Sgt. Glaser says that's when Villagomez, decided to cooperate with investigators.

"That type of cooperation helps because those individuals typically don't deal with someone they're not familiar with," he explains.

But even though all suspects are now being held in the Scott County Jail, and the baby handed over to family services, Glaser says the investigation is far from over.

Missouri Highway Patrol figures show a 50% decline in methamphetamine labs compared to last year, so Glaser now hopes to focus his efforts on fighting other drugs, like marijuana.

"We just have to stay on top of it all," he says.
