MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Gator season is underway in Alabama. The Alabama Wildlife and Fisheries Division shared photos of the most recent hunt to Facebook Friday.

According to the ALWFFD Facebook page, the pictures are from Thursday’s hunt in the state’s southwest hunting zone. From the photos, it looks like the hunt was a success for teams wanting to catch their gator of the season.

Hunting season for the American Alligator in Alabama is open to four areas of the state:

  • Southwest zone: Private and public waters in Baldwin and Mobile Counties and private and public waters in Washington, Clarke, and Monroe Counties that lie east of U.S. Highway 43 and south of U.S. Highway 84.
  • Southeast zone: Private and public waters in Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, and Russell Counties (excluding Alabama state public waters in Walter F. George Reservoir (Lake Eufaula) and its navigable tributaries).
  • West central zone: Private and public waters in Monroe (north of U.S. Highway 84), Wilcox, and Dallas Counties.
  • Lake Eufaula zone: Alabama state public waters in the Walter F. George Reservoir (Lake Eufaula) and its navigable tributaries, south of Hwy 208, Omaha Bridge (excluding Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge).

Getting a permit or “tag” isn’t as easy as applying for a hunting or fishing license. According to Outdoor Alabama's website, potential hunters submit an application and then are randomly drawn by a computer. If selected, the hunter must then attend a mandatory training course.

Only 260 people throughout the state are selected to participate in the hunt. Each person who receives an alligator possession tag is allowed to harvest only one alligator.
