MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Eligible Illinoisans can now register to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicle office.

Residents can check and see if their registration is up to date, and if not they will be asked to register at their current address.

According to the DMV's website, this makes Illinois the 10th state to enact legislation of this type.

Murphysboro, Ill. Mayor Will Stephens said that when he first ran for mayor in 2013 the voter turnout was only 1500 out of 4500 registered voters in a town of about 8,000.

Stephens said that even in last years presidential election voter turnout was only at 50 percent. He said that he hopes with the automatic voter registration, the number of registered voters will increase it will also lead to more informed voters.

"I think that automatic voter registration, certainly I hope helps generate conversations amongst people to get more informed about what they are doing at the ballot box and not just voting off of some emotion or something else," said Stephens.

The steering committee of the Just Democracy Illinois which is a coalition of voting rights advocacy organizations issued the following statement:

“With automatic voter registration, we’re finally modernizing and securing the electoral process for all eligible voters in Illinois. While other states are moving backwards, creating unnecessary barriers and hurdles to the ballot box, now more than ever Illinoisans will be able to have up-to-date registration that will save time and hassle before they go vote. Still, there is more to be done to complete the process of implementing automatic voter registration in Illinois. All voters should still make sure their registration is up to date ahead of the November general election.”

The Illinois General assembly approved the law in December 2017.
