Greitens trial delayed as juror selection slowly moves forward

ST. LOUIS (KMOV/AP) — The judge overseeing Governor Eric Greitens' criminal invasion of privacy trial said he wanted to get through 120 potential jurors Friday, day 2 of the selection process.

So far, 33 jurors will move on to Monday.

The trial, which was originally going to start Monday, will likely start Wednesday, Burlison acknowledged Friday. They were initially supposed to go through 80 potential jurors on the first day, but only made it through 40. By the end of Friday, they made it through 85 potential jurors.

According to News 4 Investigative Reporter Lauren Trager, six potential jurors say they had hardships in sitting through the trial, mainly due to health-related reasons or being caretakers. Judge Rex Burlison excused all six.

News 4 was in the courtroom as Gov. Greitens greeted attorneys with smiles and handshakes and calmly waited as Judge Burlison asked questions of the jurors.

Each potential juror was given a three-page questionnaire. They were then asked questions individually by both sides. Questions focused on how much they had watched or read about the case, whether or not they had an opinion on case or on the governor's potential innocence or guilt.

One woman told the court she is "disappointed" in the governor as a leader in Jefferson City. Another man said he believed the governor was guilty and would already be in jail if he didn't have money.  Another woman said she had read the Circuit Attorney had mishandled evidence. All were struck from the potential jury pool.

Greitens is accused of taking an unauthorized photo of a woman while she was partially nude during a 2015 sexual encounter, before he was elected. Jury selection is expected to last at least two days.

From the final group, 12 jurors will be picked along with four alternates.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
