HILLSBORO, Mo. (AP) - The mayor of a small town near St. Louis has resigned after authorities say he tried to start a fight with a sheriff's deputy with whom he's had a long-running feud.

Dennis Bradley stepped down before leaders in Hillsboro were to consider impeaching him.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the town's Board of Alderpersons accepted Bradley's resignation Monday night in an 8-0 vote. Bradley accused the board of obstructing him in a resignation letter.

Bradley was arrested this month after a confrontation in a gas station parking lot. Bradley is accused of challenging the Jefferson County sheriff's deputy to take off his badge and gun, and fight, while poking him in the chest. The town of 3,100 residents elected Bradley in April.

Alderperson Joseph Philips described the situation as "unfortunate."
