Predators beat Blackhawks 4-1 to complete sweep

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Roman Josi scored twice, Pekka Rinne had 30 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Thursday night to complete a surprising sweep of the Western Conference's top seed.

Colton Sissons also scored and Viktor Arvidsson added an empty-net goal as Nashville completed the franchise's first playoff sweep. Led by Rinne and a terrific defensive performance by their lines and defensive pairings, the Predators limited the high-scoring Blackhawks to just three goals in 13 periods.

Nashville will face the winner of the St. Louis-Minnesota series in the second round. The Blues have a 3-1 lead heading into Game 5 on Saturday in Minnesota.

CARDINALS-BREWERS

Brewers hit 3 HRS, beat the Cardinals 7-5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jett Bandy, Eric Thames and Travis Shaw each hit home runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 Thursday night.

Bandy hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Thames put Milwaukee ahead with a two-run shot off Carlos Martinez (0-3) in the fifth. Shaw's three-run blast in the first made it 12 consecutive games going yard for the Brewers, who lead the majors with 32 home runs.

Zach Davies (1-2) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out five, but needed Thames' NL-leading eighth home run and seventh in the last eight games for his first win in four starts.

Jacob Barnes pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Matt Carpenter hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth and Kolten Wong, whose career-high seven triples led the Cardinals in 2016, hit his first of the season in the top of the second with the bases loaded.

CARDINALS MOVES

Peralta put on DL by Cardinals with upper respiratory issue

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Infielder Jhonny Peralta was put on the 10-day disabled list by the St. Louis Cardinals because of an upper respiratory issue.

Peralta sat out the four previous games, and the move was retroactive to Sunday. He is hitting .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs.

St. Louis recalled left-hander Tyler Lyons before Thursday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Lyons' 2016 season ended July 31st because of a right knee stress reaction. He made three appearances in rehabilitation games with Triple-A Memphis this season, allowing two runs in 14 innings.

IHSA TRACK-EIU

Eastern Illinois to continue hosting track championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - The running, vaulting, jumping and throwing will continue at Eastern Illinois University through 2022.

The Illinois High School Association board of directors approved a recommendation this week to extend the Eastern Illinois hosting contract for the IHSA Track & Field State Final at O'Brien Stadium .

The 5-year extension is for both boys' and girls' meets.

Tom Michael is Eastern Illinois' athletic director. He says the IHSA track championship has been "a vital part of the community" for decades. He says it's a great way to introduce the Charleston-based school to thousands of visitors.

A 1972 conflict moved the boys' meet to O'Brien from the University of Illinois. Urbana reclaimed it in 1973, but O'Brien has hosted since 1974. Girls have competed at O'Brien since their first meet in 1973.
