(KTVU/CNN) - Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark is thanking friends for support after announcing he has been diagnosed with ALS.

In a statement released Sunday night, Clark said he was diagnosed after visiting six neurologists and three ALS specialists.

He says while the disease seems to be progressing slowly, he has started feeling weakness in parts of his body.

Clark, 60, suspects his time playing football caused the disease.

Clark played nine seasons for the 49ers, and is best known for making the famous touchdown thrown by Joe Montana in the 1982 NFC championship game known as "The Catch."
