AVALANCHE-BLACKHAWKS

Blackhawks strike fast in third, rally past Avs 6-3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jonathan Toews scored twice and Richard Panik and Artemi Panarin each had one in a span of 3:02 in the third period to erase Colorado's two-goal lead and rally the Chicago Blackhawks past the Avalanche 6-3 on Sunday night for their fifth straight win.

Patrick Kane scored his team-leading 32nd goal and Marcus Kruger added an empty-netter for Chicago, which won for the 17th time in its last 20 games to pull seven points ahead of slumping second-place Minnesota in the Central Division.

With Chicago trailing 3-1, Toews tipped in Kane's bouncing shot at 10:17 of the third period to cut it to 3-2. The goal withstood a video review that showed Toews may have been offside.

Panik rifled in a loose puck from the slot 17 seconds later to tie it at 3. Panarin put Chicago ahead 4-3 just 17 seconds after that.

Schaefer, Holmes, lead Mississippi St past DePaul 92-71

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Blair Schaefer scored 18 points, Jazzmun Holmes added 14 and Mississippi State beat DePaul 92-71 on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Second-seeded Mississippi State used a 14-0 run in the middle of the third quarter to turn a tight game into a 61-43 advantage.

DePaul, the seven seed, scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 61-50 by the end of the third quarter, but Mississippi State responded with the first eight points of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach and advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season.

Mississippi State (31-4) had an unorthodox starting lineup for the second straight game, with usual role players like Schaefer, Ketara Chapel and Roshuna Johnson in the first five instead of Victoria Vivians, Dominique Dillingham and Chinwe Okorie.

The strategy more or less worked, though the Bulldogs' early lead quickly evaporated and a tight first half emerged. Mississippi State got a defensive stop on the final play of the second quarter to take a 38-37 advantage into halftime.

DePaul (27-8) was led by Jessica January, who scored 18 points. Brooke Schulte added 16.

Florida State beats Missouri to reach Sweet 16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Shakayla Thomas scored 20 points and third-seeded Florida State advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight season with a 77-55 victory over Number 6 seed Missouri Sunday.

Thomas, who also had 11 rebounds, was one of four Seminoles in double figures. Brittany Brown added 16 points while Imani Wright and Leticia Romero each scored 14.

Florida State (27-6) will face either second-seeded Oregon State or No. 7 seed Creighton in a regional semifinal game in Stockton, California on Saturday.

Missouri (22-11) led 17-12 22 seconds into the second quarter on a Jordan Chavis 3-pointer before Florida State took the lead for good with a 17-2 run as Romero scored six points.

The Seminoles led 32-27 at halftime but put the game out of reach by scoring the first eight points of the third quarter.

CLARKSON-WISCONSIN

Clarkson blanks Wisconsin, 3-0 for NCAA women's hockey title

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - Cayley Mercer scored two goals and Shea Tiley recorded a shutout as Clarkson captured the NCAA women's hockey National Championship with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin Sunday.

Mercer, one of five seniors, played on Clarkson's first national championship team in 2014.

Tiley was brilliant in net for the Knights, making 41 saves and limiting second-chance opportunities by the Badgers.

Wisconsin (33-3-4) lost in the semifinals in each of the last three seasons and was ranked No.1 in the nation all season. The Badgers beat Clarkson twice this season at Potsdam, N.Y.

Clarkson (32-4-5) opened the second period on the power play and Savannah Harmon made the Badgers pay 27 seconds in. Wisconsin goalkeeper Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped shots by Ella Shelton and Genevieve Bannon. After clearing the puck from behind the Wisconsin net, Bannon flicked a pass in front of the goal and Harmon deflected it past Desbiens.

Mercer scored in the third period on a breakaway and added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
