NEW YORK (RNN) - President-elect Donald Trump has chosen a member of the Obama administration to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs.

David Shulkin, a physician, is the current under secretary of health for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"He's fantastic," Trump said of Shulkin. "He will do a truly great job."

Shulkin was nominated by President Barack Obama on March 18, 2015 and confirmed by the Senate in June 2015.

He used to be the president and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.

Shulkin also interned at Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center.

Trump has pledged to overhaul the VA, a department that has seen a large influx of veterans from the Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan.
