The Jackson County State’s Attorney announced Friday that a Murphysboro, Ill. woman was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to retail theft and theft.

On December 11, 2016, Kristen Duncan, 35, received a ride from a Murphysboro woman to a local grocery store. The two then went to the Murphysboro woman’s home for a short time, and later that afternoon the woman gave Duncan a ride to Duncan’s friend’s house where the two parted ways.

On the morning of December 12, the Murphysboro woman noticed that a bottle of prescription medicine was missing from her kitchen cabinet. Later that day, Duncan admitted to having taken the medicine.

Earlier that morning, Duncan made her way to the Huck’s Store on Walnut Street in Murphysboro. While inside the store, she took two items off the shelf and left the store without paying for them. A Huck’s employee witnessed the theft and video surveillance confirmed Duncan’s actions. A warrant was issued for her arrest, and she was arrested for both crimes two days later.

Duncan’s criminal history includes three prior theft convictions, a conviction for possession of a controlled substance, and a burglary conviction, all in Jackson County, Illinois.

The investigations were conducted by the Murphysboro Police Department.
