Just a few minutes after noon in the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, January 3, new Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth was sworn into office by Vice President Joe Biden.

Duckworth is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Following the official swearing in ceremony, Senator Duckworth and Vice President Biden took part in a traditional re-enactment inside the historic Old Senate Chamber.

Family was allowed, so at the new senator's side were her husband, mother, and two-year-old daughter Abigail.

Abigail, who was in the arms of her grandmother, got a little restless during the short re-enactment and began squirming.

Vice President Biden, appearing to enjoy the little girl, delivered the last part of the oath to her. The new senator grinned, and playfully tapped her head with the paper he was holding. Abigail seemed to enjoy the attention from the Vice President, even grinning at him.

Senator Duckworth joins fellow democrat Dick Durbin as the two U.S. Senators from Illinois.
