HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) -

As many of us try to decide what our New Year's resolutions will be in 2017, a Heartland man has already set the bar pretty high for himself.

In 2016, Harrisburg pastor Brad Vinyard set at least two world records in weightlifting, and was the subject of a children's book entitled Superheroes are Everywhere.

Brad's brother and Harrisburg Middle School teacher, Ben Vinyard, wrote that book.

"Maybe Brad doesn't fly around and beat up bad guys," Ben Vinyard explained. "But it's not about the big things. It's about all of the small things that are important."

"Our lives changed dramatically when we learned of his diagnosis... then he lost his leg. But, instead of giving up, he remained a strong older brother and role model."

"Despite these bad things that happen, good things can come out of them," Brad said. "We just can't let our circumstances get the best of us."

Ben and Brad regularly speak to students in the area about the family's battle with cancer.

Brad is also an associate pastor at Harrisburg First Baptist Church, and as of the new year, is cancer free.
