NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The newly elected New Madrid County Assessor will be stepping into his new role several months earlier than expected.

Governor Jay Nixon appointed Jacob Johnson of Sikeston as the new Assessor.

Ronnie Simmons recently resigned from the position.

In November, voters chose Johnson to fill the position, but under Missouri law, he would not have taken office until Sept. 1, 2017.

“Jacob Johnson has capably served the people of New Madrid County for over 19 years in the Assessor’s office, and I am pleased to appoint him to begin serving right away as the new Assessor,” Gov. Nixon said.
