CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's deputy is getting a lot of praise after helping out a young girl who was wandering around by herself near the Dollar General on Rt. K Christmas Eve.

Lacey McCallister says she was at Dollar General that morning when she found the little girl alone outside.

McCallister says she took the girl inside, treated her with some candy and called police.

When deputies arrived, one of them bought the girl a cleaning set she was wishing for and reassured her that she was going to be okay.

The Cape Girardeau Sheriff's Department says it was  Deputy Landreth and Deputy Oslund who responded to the area.

McCallister posted the photo of the girl and the deputy on Facebook thanking the deputy for his work.

"Who knows how this little girls world may be on a normal day but hopefully this morning we all made it a little better despite the circumstances," McCallister said.

According to the sheriff's department, the dad of the child left for work and thought he locked the door.

The mother and the little girl were at home.

The sheriff's department says the mother was still sleeping when the little girl decided she was going to walk over the the store like she and her dad do sometimes.

The sheriff's department says they are not pressing charges.

The family of the young girl says it was an honest mistake and have taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The family also wants to thank the sheriff's deputies and the people at the store for helping their daughter.
