Crossword puzzle anniversary

(KFVS) -

It's a birthday of sorts for a very popular game that still has people asking about four and five letter words that begin with a "P" or a "M" or any other letter of the alphabet.

It was on this date--December 21st, 1913 the very first crossword puzzle was published.  It was created by a journalist named Arthur Wynne from Liverpool, England and it appeared in a Sunday newspaper called The New York World.

It was quite a bit different from the puzzles we see today.  It was diamond shaped and contained no black squares.  It had 32 clues.

Here are a couple of them. 2 across--What bargain hunters enjoy--the five letter answer is SALES.

5 down--a seven letter word for exchanging.  The answer--trading.

And one more--a four letter word with the clue "found on the seashore".  The answer--sand.

Happy birthday to the first published crossword puzzle--103 years old today.
