MISSOURI (KFVS) -

The Missouri Department of Transportation is calling its Christmas Angels chili dinner a success.

Nearly $7,000 was raised through this year's event. The profits brought in enough money to help 117 children in Scott and Mississippi Counties.

"The program began 30 years ago with a crockpot of chili and the desire to help at least one child," said MoDOT Senior Highway Designer Anita Clark. "The program has continued to grow. It is touching to see such an outpouring of generosity."

MoDOT volunteers work with the Department of Family Services to identify underprivileged children in the area.

"We can't thank the businesses, organizations and individuals enough for their continued support of the Christmas Angels program," said Clark. "They helped provide holiday wishes to SE Missouri families that otherwise would not have received any gifts."

She added that she wants to thank the MoDOT employees who generously used their leave time to assist, as well as the MoDOT retirees who continue to help make they yearly event possible.
