CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The third annual Student Santa's Christmas Day Meal is slated to kick off on Christmas Day in Cape Girardeau.

The event will be at Jefferson Elementary School from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Organizer Jennifer Gast said it is important for people to make sure children and families are able to have a nice meal on Christmas Day.

"Kids can do without toys," Gast said. "And they can do without other things, but you can't go without food. As a mother, the thought of putting my children to bed hungry is just hard."

Several years ago, Gast received a letter from a young child saying all he wanted for Christmas was a good, hot meal.

"All he wanted was a nice meal." Gast said. "That was what he wanted. That just broke my heart in a thousand pieces and from that moment on I knew I wanted to be able to feed people."

There will be toys given out to children just to add to the full Christmas experience, Gast said. Santa will be on hand to greet the children, as well.

Gast said this event is starting to become a family tradition for volunteers and families to be together and to make lasting memories.

"I've had moms and dads tell me this is what they really look forward to for Christmas," she said. "Being able to stand at that serving line with their son and daughter and helping and feeding those that would otherwise have nothing on Christmas to eat."

At this point around 400 tickets have been given out to people for this meal.

Tickets for this event can be picked up at The Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau.

Gast said she hopes the dinner will be a memory children and families will cherish.

"My hope is that one day when these kids grow up that they will remember once upon a time that somebody did something like this for them. That somebody helped them and they in turn will go and help somebody else."

Every person that wants to eat must have a ticket. However, Gast said nobody will be turned down.

Food will be provided by the Isle of Capri Casino in Cape Girardeau.
