Marion armed robbery suspect in custody after trying to get away with infant in car

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

An armed robbery is under investigation in Marion, Illinois.

The Marion Police Department reports Callie Buchanan Jr., 25 of Johnston City, was arrested in connection to an armed robbery at the Circle K Convenience Store.

It happened at the gas station on north Carbon Street around 2:20 a.m. on Dec. 20.

Police say a suspect vehicle was identified and located a short time later thanks to a tip from a witness who saw the suspect leave the scene.

Investigators could not get the driver to stop.

Police say the suspect led officers northbound on I-57 before exiting in Johnston City.

The suspect then got out of the vehicle and tried to run away after colliding with a police squad car.

Police were able to take the suspect into custody after a short pursuit.

Afterward, police found an infant inside of the vehicle.

No word yet on the state of the child.

Buchanan is being held at the Williamson County Jail for robbery, fleeing/eluding police, and endangering the health/life of a child.

Formal charges are still pending.

The investigation is ongoing.
