Heartland Memorial Day Services
Many folks attend Memorial Day services throughout the Heartland on Monday.
In southern Illinois, participants unveiled a living memorial in Marion.  Close to 500 people came out to pay their respects.
The monument honors not only servicemen and women who died in the line of duty, but also those who made it safely home.  The memorial has a special meaning for one southern Illinois mother, her Marine son Aaron Pickering died in Iraq.  She added his dog tags to the memorial.
Over in Sikeston retired and active members of the military took part in ceremonies.  Included in many parts of the program were members of the 1140th Engineering Battalion, they returned from service in Iraq this past March.
In Kentucky, outside the McCracken County Courthouse, several dozen people took a moment to say thanks to the men and women in the military.
Special honors were given to one local woman for her service during Operation Desert Storm.
