It is Friday, Dec. 16, 2016.

First Alert Weather Outlook:

Friday will be another cold and mostly cloudy day in the Heartland. Waking up temperatures will be right around 20, but we’ll warm up slowly to hit about 40-degrees at around 5 p.m. tonight. The big story is the weekend. Saturday looks much warmer, but rainy and windy. Then Sunday another arctic blast hits the Heartland bringing with it dangerously cold weather with wind chills near zero.

Making Headlines:

Under investigation: The suspect who shot a police officer in the head Thursday night in Mount Vernon, Washington has been taken into custody. The officer was taken to a hospital where he is in serious, but stable condition.

Tragic death: Indiana Conservation officers are reporting that two 12-year-olds died after falling into a pond near Winslow. We're told one was a girl and one was a boy. A conservation officer rescued both victims. According to officials, both of the children had been underwater at least a half an hour before rescue.

Freezing weather: A Cleveland man was found dead on the porch of a home with a key in his hand. Investigators believe the cold temperatures are likely to blame. Paramedics also responded to at least four other cold-related calls Thursday.

Cracking down: Departments across the Heartland are increasing enforcement over the holidays to reduce substance-impaired driving fatalities. Officers will be aggressively looking for impaired drivers during the crackdown, and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired.
