JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Health officials in Jackson County, Illinois confirmed one case of whooping cough recently but said it's not unusual this time of year.

Whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection.

At first, whooping cough has the same symptoms as the average cold: mild coughing, sneezing, running nose and a low fever.

But then it sticks around and develops.

"You know, kind of beware of any cough that you may have but certainly if it seems to be a dry, hacking, nagging cough, would be what I would watch for," said Bridget Evans, family nurse practitioner.

As you may know, whooping cough is preventable.

The best way to keep it away from your family is to get the vaccination.
