(KFVS) -

Despite what you read on Facebook, a meteor did not spark a fire in Clinton County, Illinois.

A popular page that reports scanner traffic from emergency crews put a report out that said "A meteor has hit the road and on fire."

So, we called to find out what really happened.

According to dispatch, the fire was actually a controlled burn.

Apparently, a fellow dispatcher was joking with one of the crews and someone listening to the scanner picked it up and published it.

That post has since been deleted.

So, what are the lessons to be learned here?

  1. Emergency dispatchers have a sense of humor, too.
  2. Not everything you read on Facebook is true.
