CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Red Star district in Cape Girardeau, Missouri could soon have a new look.

Cape Girardeau city planner Ryan Shrimplin said they had a meeting with Vagn Hansen II with Benchmark Planning recently.

Shrimplin said Benchmark Planning is an organization and Hansen offered ideas for the Red Star district in Cape Girardeau and would be willing to provide up to 100 hours to plan and help improve the neighborhood.

Ideas proposed were tiny homes park, a trail that would extend from the Red Star boat ramp to the Cape Rock Park, a barge for children to learn about the river and ships, and sculptures that people can interact with to experience the water.

Planners are looking for these ideas to first start on the land as part of the flood buyout area in the Red Star District. They may consider moving up along the neighborhoods to the north after that.

Shrimplin said the process of this idea is good and is hoping to see more development in that area.

A couple of people we talked with in that area feel this could help boost interest in the area and could only help rejuvenate the area that was once a thriving part of Cape Girardeau.

The next step is the city is looking to schedule a public meeting sometime in March for input from the residents.

Shrimplin said it really is up to the neighborhood what ideas they want to support.
