CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Victory Dream Center in Carbondale, Illinois kicked off its 18th annual Spirit of Love/Operation 400 Food and Gift Drive on Sunday, Dec. 11.

This year 400 families were given presents and food. Studies suggest that the poverty rate in Jackson County continues to grow each year so organizers understand the importance of the event.

More than 40,000 pounds of food and 1,000 gifts and other items were given to families at the event.

One woman said she has had a hard time finding work since she was last laid off and appreciates being able to provide gifts for her family on Christmas.

"I'm glad the people reach out to donate these to this organization to help people in need like me," Deloris Easley said. "It really helps me in the end of every year when I struggle going through hard times of being laid off to work."

Marcie Johnson of Murphysboro said she just got into a new home but is still struggling.

"This is my first Christmas with my great niece and my first Christmas with my great granddaughter," Johnson said. "So they'll be in my first new house by myself and I'm highly excited. I don't have to cry for not having nothing for them this time."

About a hundred volunteers helped out in wrapping presents and hauling toys and food to help make the event special for everyone involved.
