CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Happy Slapowitz Toy Drive was held in downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Thursday evening, December 8.

The toy drive benefits the Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots campaign.

More than a dozen bars and more than two dozen bands participated in the event.

About 3,000 people attended the event and paid a cover, which benefited the campaign. If they didn't have $10, they donated a new, unwrapped toy.

The count on Friday showed they had collected 3,800 to 4,000 toys.

Volunteers used the money donated to shop at Toys R Us. Every dollar collected went to buy toys for the Toys for Tots center in Jackson.

Organizers said this year set a new record.
