United Way of SEMO kicks off United Days of Caring drive

Giving back has never been so easy thanks to The United Days of Caring.

The weekend long event begins on Friday, Sept. 9.

It gives people across the Southeast Missouri region the opportunity to volunteer in their community.

The event is geared not only towards individuals, but businesses, churches, organizations, clubs, and schools are all encouraged to get involved.

It serves the Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Scott City, Perryville and Marble Hill.

People of all ages and skill levels can participate - there is a job for everyone.

Projects include painting, organizing, cleaning, and even singing!

One program in particular is The United Way's Read to Succeed.

You can sign up for a training to help a child in your community learn how to read.

Training will begin on Monday, September 12th with two separate hour long training sessions for volunteers from 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Beyond the volunteer events, there are some separate events as well.

A kickoff breakfast will take place on Friday, Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Capaha Park's Pavilion.

You can learn more about events for the weekend or check in before heading off to your project.

Even a Poker Run sponsored by Harley Owners Group (HOG) lets you give back.

On Sunday, Sept. 11 there is an event to observe the 15th anniversary of 9/11.

A brief patriotic ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at the County Pleas Courthouse Gazebo on Lorimier in Cape.

There will be a mass choir, and anyone who would like to sing is encouraged to join by arriving at 1:00 p.m. to practice.

After the ceremony there will be bounce houses, games and a street dance to celebrate.

All events are free and open to the public; you are encouraged to bring your blankets and chairs.
