CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A new juvenile administration building in Cape Girardeau County will streamline juvenile justice services.

Many people crowded into the new State of Missouri Thirty-Second Circuit Court Juvenile Division Building on Thursday, September 8 for a formal dedication ceremony.

The new facility was created by renovating an existing 10,000 square foot building located at 2137 Rust Avenue in Cape Girardeau.

“We paid $505,000 for this piece of property,” said Cape Girardeau County Commissioner Charlie Herbst. “It’s 10,000 square feet on two acres, which gives us room for future growth.”

A combination of grants and county funds allowed for the renovation of the building to include space for dedicated courtroom for juvenile proceedings, files, resources materials and program areas.

“The juvenile department here in Cape County has always been a leader in trying to do community service projects with the youth and activities that have a purpose. Rather than just picking up trash somewhere – they’re learning a skill,” said Commissioner Herbst. “They’ve been doing some restaurant training, first aid training and some other programs. So this building affords us the ability to put in a true dedicated program space with plenty of room.”

Juvenile services were formerly located in two different buildings, which Herbst said was very inefficient.

“Having all employees and resources in one location is amazing because before when they needed a file or another employee with a particular skill set they had to find them in the other building,” Herbst said. “Now everybody is in one building – programs, activities and resources.”

The Thirty-second Circuit Court jurisdictional area includes Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, and Perry Counties.

All three counties contribute in the cost of operating the facility and services for the juvenile court.
