STE. GENEVIEVE, MO (KFVS) -

High school football season is in full swing and one Heartland team is gaining national attention.

Valle Catholic (Ste. Genevieve, Mo.) moved into the top spot for longest active win streak of any high school team in the country.

Valle’s streak sits at 48 wins in a row. They moved past Edgewood Academy (Elmore, Ala.) who previously held the record at 71.

But the Warriors are not letting the success distract them for their season goals.

Cole Wood, a senior wide receiver, said the streak is rarely discussed within the team.

"I mean it's probably always in the back of our mind," Wood said. “Every week we come to face the next the opponent."

The last time the Warriors lost was in the 2012 Missouri Class 1 State Championship Game against Penney (Hamilton, Mo.).

Since then Valle has won three straight Class 1 titles in three undefeated seasons. During that run, they’ve outscored their opponents 2466 to 472, nearly a 6 to 1 margin.

For seniors like Wood, winning has become a tradition.

"You see it from the older guys, when they come back to games, you want to show them they taught you something," Wood said.

Just don’t expect head coach Judd Naeger to talk about the lengthy streak.

"I don't really know anything about it to tell you the truth," he said.

Naeger, in his 13th year coaching at Valle, said it is important to keep his team focused.

"That's what's worked over the years and you know we're not going to look ahead and we're not going to look behind."

A message that has resonated with his team as they continue their quest for football perfection.

"I think when we strive to get better every day, it really helps us a lot,” Wood said.

Valle Catholic is 3-0 to start the season. The Warriors are on the road at Crystal City, Friday.
