CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A groundbreaking was held on Wednesday, September 7 at 1 p.m. for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department Fire Station No. 4.

The fire station is located at 3011 Lexington, near the roundabout.

Officials hope to be operating from the new station by summer 2017. It was estimated to cost $3 million and is funded by the Fire Sales Tax and Public Safety Trust Fund approved by voters in November 2014.

There are four total fire stations in Cape Girardeau.

Public Information Manager Nicolette Brennan, Fire Station 4 has served the northwest quadrant of the city since it opened in 1974. In addition to covering commercial and residential developments, along with much of Interstate 55, Station 4 responds through an automatic-aid agreement to all incidents in Cape Girardeau County involving potential rescues and extrications.

An informal "open house" was held in June for the fire station's new neighbors that gave them a chance to learn more about the project, ask questions and provide input on potential materials and design of the project.
