Authorities identify armed suspect shot, killed by ISP trooper near Brookport, IL

Authorities with the Illinois State Police have identified the suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting near Brookport, Illinois on Saturday, September 3.

Donny Max Daugherty, 36, of Clifton, Tennessee, was shot and killed Saturday after a confrontation with police.

He was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service for a probation violation pertaining to a charge of possession of a weapon and an aggravated assault warrant through the Nashville, Tennessee Police Department. Daugherty was known to have violent tendencies and had prior arrests for aggravated assault and weapons violations.

According to Illinois State Police, on Friday, September 2, an armed suspect entered a home in Metropolis at approximately 4:09 p.m., and assaulted a resident.

The armed suspect fled on a motorcycle and was pursued by local law enforcement. They escaped after abandoning the motorcycle in rural Massac County.

On Saturday, September 3, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a citizen witnessed a person, possibly carrying a handgun, in a neighbor’s yard and reported hearing 3 to 4 gunshots.

A Massac County deputy and a Metropolis P.D. officer arrived on scene and tried to find the subject.

Officers went toward the subject’s last known direction of travel. The officers heard a gunshot close to their location while searching the area, but were unable to find anyone.

Illinois State Police District 22 Patrol assistance was requested at approximately 6:15 a.m. An additional shot was fired as an inner perimeter was being established.

ISP District 13 sent additional patrol units to reinforce the perimeter. ISP Air Operations and ISP SWAT also responded to the scene.

At approximately 9:21 a.m., an ISP trooper on the perimeter encountered the armed suspect. Shots were fired and the suspect was fatally wounded.

The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene. Identification of the suspect is pending verification by the Massac County Coroner.

ISP Division of Internal Investigation and ISP Crime Scene Services are responding to the scene. There were no injuries to any of the officers involved in this incident.

This incident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police, Illinois Conservation Police, Massac County Sheriff's Office, US Marshalls, and Metropolis P.D. No further information is being released at this time.
