CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

There's plenty of heartland communities sending needed supplies to flood victims in Baton Rouge.

But some school leaders in the Bootheel decided to bring relief efforts to the classroom.

When Caruthersville art teacher Nathan Ellis saw the damage in Louisiana, he knew it would be a great teaching moment for student about helping others.

With the approval of his school’s principal, Ellis started accepting donations to personally take to the flood victims.

Dozens of students at Caruthersville Middle School donated clothes and supplies.

Ellis said he hopes students understand that even if something doesn’t happen to you, it shouldn’t stop you from helping others.

“Some don’t have any family members affected. My daughter lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where we’re going to take the stuff to a distribution center, but she’s helping and we’re helping. We’re not a part of just the Bootheel community, but the worldwide community.”

Ellis will also pick up donated item collected in churches in a few cities in the heartland.

He plans to pack up all the supplies and start his trip to Baton Rouge tonight.
