SCOTT CITY, MO (KFVS) -

Rats are running the streets in Scott City, and leaders there call it an infestation.

From a distance, one particular vacant house in the city looks like a nice house - but residents call it ‘The Rat House.’

“it’s just downright nasty in that house," said Scott City Resident James Williams.

Williams says the former residents of the house knew about the rats.

“They openly admitted that they fed the rats that’s in the house. That’s why there’s a rat infestation. That’s why it smells like death around the house.”

The owner of the property agrees, and believes the residents intentionally fed and harbored the vermin.

“The level I saw was a pretty good amount. Typically, with the farm fields around you do see quite a bit of that," said Lieutenant Casey Dodd with the Scott City Police Department.

Scott City leaders are working with the homeowner and police to clear the property, but there’s another problem.

“Gradually the rats are spreading. I don’t know if they fed them steroids or not, but these rats are massive. I mean, they are huge, and there’s a few back there that’s dead that equals the size of a kitten," Williams said.

One resident took a photo comparing one of the dead rats to his size 10 shoe.

“I think it should be up to him [the land owner] to take care of everybody’s rat problem they have," said Williams.

Lieutenant Dodd says getting rid of the rats is a process, but one they can’t handle themselves.

The homeowner has to be a big part of that.

The city cited him – giving them two weeks to get it cleaned up.

Shortly after KFVS talked to the homeowner, he had cleaning crews and pest control on scene.

However, some residents in Cloverdale still have to deal with it, and even poison isn’t keeping them away.

“Obviously that did not work because there are rat traps practically everywhere around here," Williams said.

“Unfortunately, there’s just not a whole lot we can do with the rats because they have spread," Lt. Dodd said.

Which leaves residents wishing ‘The Rat House’ was more of a flat house.

“Get rid of the issue. Bulldoze the house. I don’t care what it would do or what it would take or how much – it’s their house, it’s their responsibility," Williams said.

KFVS had no way of contacting the former tenants of this house.
