CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Department of Veterans Affairs is awarding Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri a grant of $626,440 to continue its services that help low-income veterans in 36 counties throughout southern Missouri.

According to Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, the funding is for the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program which helps veterans who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness.

Catholic Charities provides the veterans with case management services and temporary financial assistance for rent and utilities, security deposits, moving costs, child care, emergency supplies and transportation.

Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri has a service area that covers the 36 southernmost counties in Missouri from Joplin to Cape Girardeau, and the bootheel.

Since the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program began in December of 2014, 344 individuals in 238 households have been served.

According to Catholic Charities, the majority of those they served were homeless and lacked family connections or community resources to help them find stable housing.

The funding for the grant begins on October 1, 2016 and ends on September 30, 2017.

For more information on how to apply for the program, call the nearest Catholic Charities office and ask to speak with a veterans program representative.
