STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A cancer diagnosis is devastating in so many ways.

It’s crippling not only physically and financially, but also emotionally, and sometimes spiritually.

The physical restrictions for many can be depressing, and sometimes make the patient wonder if fighting is even worth it.

Thankfully, many patients have loving family members who show them daily how much they are loved.

Sometimes, all it takes is a boost from friends and the community to give that cancer patient the strength he or she needs to fight another day and rejoice in the beautiful day they have been given to enjoy.

That’s what happened to Jerry Worthy of Puxico, Missouri.

In 2015, Jerry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

After an extensive surgery, he went through six months of chemotherapy and radiation.

Just recently, Jerry went back for a doctor’s visit and they found cancer on his lungs.

A heartbreaking discovery, but Jerry is handling it well.

He plans to enjoy every breath he is given.

One thing he regretted was not finishing a special project he started in his yard.

Jerry has always wanted a workshop.

He had the concrete poured, and that was as far as he had gotten.

Little did he know his wife was scheming with his friends to make his dream come true.

A couple of weekends ago, dozens of friends, church members, and people from the community surprised Jerry at his home.

They all came ready to work, with hammers and nails in hand.

To say Jerry was overwhelmed, would be an understatement.

Be sure and watch Heartland News at 10 p.m. on Thursday night as Crystal Britt and photographer Don Frazier share more of this amazing story of friendship and love.
