TAMMS, IL (KFVS) -

He wanted to make his son's 7th birthday special, but 2nd Lieutenant Delvonte Gathright got a surprise of his own!

Gathright wanted to surprise his son, Tydell, at school on his birthday.

He showed up at Egyptian Elementary School on Wednesday, but his son's second grade class had a surprise of their own!

When he walked in, the class presented Gathright with a flag they made for him!

So, how did they know Gathright would stop by to get the flag?

Well, that's where family comes in to play.

Gathright said he talked to his cousin about his plan and his cousin talked to Tydell's teacher and she put the plan in motion.

On his Facebook post, Gathright said "I am sure they didn't think much of this gift, but this gift meant more to me than any accommodation or achievement medal I have received in my seven years of service."

Gathright said he went to Egyptian schools from age 9 through his Sophomore year. That's when he transferred to Massac County High School to Play Football.

After high school graduation in 2003, Gathright continued with school and work.

He decided to enlist in 2009.

He's been stationed at Fort Knox, Fort Benning, South Korea, and Fort Hood.

Gathright was deployed to Jordan for 9 months.

He was recently commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant and is back at Fort Benning for Infantry Officer School.

Gathright said, "It's things like this that make me proud that I decided to put this uniform on."
