GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

An 88-year-old man is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Graves County on Thursday, September 1.

According to Graves County Sheriff Jason Harpole, deputies were dispatched at around 1:09 p.m. to the crash in the 4700 block of KY 131.

He said when deputies arrived, they found that 25-year-old Devin Carlton of Hickory was going southbound on KY 131 in a 2004 Pontiac four-door.

A preliminary investigation showed that Carlton did not see Johnie Scroggins, 88, weed-eating on the west side of the road.

Sheriff Harpole said Scoggins was trying to cross KY 131 from west to east and Carlton stated he applied his brakes and tried to swerve into the other lane.

However, the sheriff said Scoggins was hit and killed.

The investigation is ongoing and a collision reconstruction is being done by the Graves County Sheriff's Office.

That portion of the roadway will be closed until approximately 5:30 p.m., for crash reconstruction and investigation. Traffic may detour via KY 301 and KY 483.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Kentucky State Police, Mayfield/Graves County EMS, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the Clear Springs Fire Department and the Graves County Coroner's Office.
