CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Central Junior High kicked off girls softball in a brand new sports season Wednesday, August 31.

The Lady Tigers took a dramatic inaugural win over Carbondale at Central Junior High.

"Well I was nervous," Central eighth grader Catherin Davis said after she took the mound to seal the win.

The Tigers won 18-17, fending off a 7th inning scoring pushing by the Terriers.

Head coach Michael Hines said it's been a long road up to this point to get ready for the opener.

“We worked very hard," Hines said. "Yeah it's very exciting very blessed to be head coach this first year."

He said the win shows his girls have what it takes.

"As you can hear they're pretty excited," Hines said after the game.

"I'm just so happy we all worked together and it was a great win," Davis said.

For most of the girls it's their first time all playing together, but that hasn't slowed down their start.

"We're a family, first day we were such a family we got along so well," Central eighth grader Brooke Witvoet said.

The Lady Tigers are slated to play all Illinois schools this season since no area Missouri schools field junior high teams.

And to say they're excited for more upcoming firsts would be putting it lightly.

"I know I get to start off the junior high softball team and that's really special to me," Witvoet said.
