Pilot identified in deadly ultralight crash in Jefferson Co., IL

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

One person is dead after an ultralight crashed in Jefferson County, Illinois on Tuesday, August 30.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Travis Allen, there was only one person on the ultralight, a male pilot.

That man was identified as Jason Pearson, 39, of McLeansboro. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the sheriff's office, the crash happened around 4 p.m.

Sheriff Allen said the crash was in the area of N. Chestnut Lane and E. Liberty Rd.

According to Tony Molinaro with the Federal Aviation Administration, an ultralight crashed in a bean field two miles south of the Mount Vernon Airport.

At this time, Molinaro said they believe it is a small ultralight that is not considered an aircraft.

The vessel consists of a fabric body with metal rods for support.

Agents with the National Transportation Safety Board were on their way to the scene to investigate as of 8 p.m. on Tuesday and were expected to arrive Wednesday sometime.

Sheriff Allen said the FAA will also be conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
