ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that hit central Italy this past week, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency - along with local emergency management agencies - are encouraging Illinois resident to take part in October's "Great ShakeOut" earthquake drill.

It's a worldwide movement dedicated to preparing people for the worst should earthquakes occur, and with southern Illinois being home to two seismic zones, residents of the state are particularly encouraged to participate and learn the fundamentals of earthquake safety on 10:20 am on October 20th.

Schools, government agencies, families, businesses, and other groups or individuals who want to register for the drill can do so at http://www.shakeout.org/centralus/

October 20th is the date for the international drill, but individuals are encouraged to participate at any time within two weeks prior to that date,

More information about earthquake risks in Illinois including steps on what to do before, during, and after a quake can be found by visiting http://www.illinois.gov/ready/Pages/default.aspx
